Pink or White Ash
Alphitonia Petriei
Description: A very fast growing, evergreen tree which may lose leaves in winter in cooler regions. Grows tall and slender if crowded or short and spreading in the open.
Foliage: Attractive, broad, dark green leaves, chalky-white beneath and rusty when young. Bark and leaves smell like liniment when rubbed.
Flowers: Large heads of white flowers, borne on the tips of the branches in spring.
Fruit: Small, round, dull-black fruit in summer.
Cultivation/Uses: An ideal quick growing specimen or shade tree, as with warmth, fertiliser and plenty of water it can grow 3m in one year. Plant on the edge of gardens or on its own, as the aggressive root systems will inhibit the growth of surrounding plants. Short lived, sometimes living for only a couple of years.
