Black Apple
Planchonella Australis
Description: A large green tree.
Foliage: Plants develop a thick crown of dark green, glossy foliage which ooze a milky sap when pulled off the twigs.
Fruit: Masses of black, plum-like fruit containing red flesh and attractive shiny brown seeds. Summer. The fruit is edible and makes wonderful jam. Trees fruit heavily every couple of years.
Cultivation: For quick growth, add fertiliser and keep well watered in dry weather. Eliminate grass competition from base of plants.
Uses: Often grown for its hard, handsomely-marked wood which is used for cabinet making.
