Yellow Mangosteen

Yellow Mangosteen is a round fruit with very tart yellow segments. The high acidity makes it ideal for jams and jellies but removing the seed and skin can be time consuming. Easier to grow in the subtropics than the purple mangosteen, but the flavour is altogether different. The tree grows well in full sun and shade. It will tolerate and continue to fruit heavily in drought conditions. The tree is very attractive, with large drooping leaves and a layered form. The fruit can reach 8-10 cm in length and looks highly ornamental when in the tree. Pairs so well with a Miracle Fruit to reduce the acid flavour and bring out the interesting tropical flavours.

Taro - Black Magic

A highly ornamental pond plant with burgundy stems and leaves, it is also called Elephant Ears due to the shape of the leaves. They are an ideal edge plant for ponds where they can be submerged to a depth of 15cm. Best grown in pots so they do not overcrowd and dominate the pond. They can also be grown in moist, partially shaded spots, in the garden although they will tolerate full sun if they receive plenty of water. Black magic taro also make an attractive house plant. Taro should never be eaten raw, due to the presence of harmful oxalates, which are eliminated with cooking. These substances are particularly high in the leaves. Elephant apple

I have one of these and it is a lovely tree. Almost 6m high and still growing. Does make a bit of mess when it drops its leaves but new growth is worth it. The fruit is certainly an 'acquired' taste but worth it just for the tree.

Just found out that seeds I found in our cemetary are Elephant Apple. Picked a couple to take to nursery to see if they knew what they were and just found them growing at Palmetum in Townsville and had a sign telling us what it was.
