    Staghorn Fern (30cm)

    The staghorn is one of the most prominent and stunning features of our native rainforest.  They are epiphytic and adorn the treetops with their spectacular foliage, they can also be lithophytic which means growing on rocks.  Each fern consists of two types of frond, the nest fronds are infertile and grow around the host tree holding the fern firmly in place as well as providing it with a nest at the top to catch falling leaves which rot down and feed the plant.  The fertile fronds are the dramatic antler shaped fronds that produce the spore, these hang down from the center of the fern.  It i

    A spectacular native rainforest tree for large gardens. Bright green, shiny, palmate shaped leaves with red bell-shaped flowers in summer. The best displays occur after a hot dry start to summer The tree flowers when it is deciduous and sometimes flowers spectacularly in the Christmas holiday period. They stand out in native forest vistas during this time. Tolerant of most soil types and positions.

    Black bean

    Attractive native riparian rainforest tree with a handsome rounded crown of glossy dark green foliage and profuse flushes of yellow and red pea-like flowers during summer. The timber is highly prized. Bird attracting. Large and spreading in the open to 10m but can reach 40m in its native habitat. First Australians used the seeds to make a damper after much preparation to remove the toxic substances by cooking, grinding and leaching in water.

    Attractive rainforest pine that bears seeds on swollen edible stalks - which is the 'plum'. The seeds get darker the riper they are. The purple 'fruit' are grape-like with a sweet, juicy, soft jelly-like pulp with a subtle plum flavour. The slightly resinous fruit can be used for both sweet and savoury recipes. It is an attractive hedge due to its contrasting dark and lime green foliage. The timber is popular in cabinet making.     A small to medium tree with a bushy habit. The dark green leaves usually have rusty brown hairs on the underside producing a fascinating colour change on windy days, but not always. Makes a beautiful shade tree, very hardy. The fruit is round, red and glossy when ripe, up to 2cm in diameter, with a smooth, pleasantly tasting flesh covering a centre with numerous seeds. Fruit quality varies with growing conditions.
