Related to the Chinese Gooseberry or Kiwi it differs in fruit size and cold hardiness. The fruit are generally green, fuzzless, and the size of grapes with great flavour. A small, green to purple skinned fruit similar to kiwifruit. Often sweeter than the kiwifruit, hardy kiwifruit can be eaten whole and need not be peeled. The skin is smooth and leathery providing a deceiving contrast to the fuzzy, brown exterior of its larger sibling fruits. The name Hardy Kiwifruit comes from the fact that this species can tolerate very low winter temperatures and at the same time doesn't require a lot of winter chill, so can be grown over a wide climatic range. Pollinates with a regular male kiwi fruit. Hardy kiwifruits are smaller than normal Kiwifruit, an inch or so long. Fruits are borne in clusters and have smooth, edible skins so can be eaten just like grapes. The hardy kiwifruit has the same emerald-green interior and similar flavor to the grocery store kiwifruit, except that hardy kiwifruits are sweeter.
