Related to the Chinese Gooseberry or Kiwi it differs in fruit size and cold hardiness. The fruit are generally green, fuzzless, and the size of grapes with great flavour. Cut open, they look much like regular kiwifruit with its small black seeds. Also known as the Hardy Kiwi due to their hardiness to cold.

A small, green to purple skinned fruit similar to kiwifruit. Often sweeter than the kiwifruit, hardy kiwifruit can be eaten whole and need not be peeled. The skin is smooth and leathery providing a deceiving contrast to the fuzzy, brown exterior of its larger sibling fruits. Plant 3 or more to increase your chances of getting both male and female plants for pollination.

The name Hardy Kiwifruit comes from the fact that this species can tolerate very low winter temperatures and at the same time doesn't require a lot of winter chill, so can be grown over a wide climatic range. Pollinates with a regular male kiwi fruit. Hardy kiwifruits are smaller than normal Kiwifruit, an inch or so long. Fruits are borne in clusters and have smooth, edible skins so can be eaten just like grapes. The hardy kiwifruit has the same emerald-green interior and similar flavor to the grocery store kiwifruit, except that hardy kiwifruits are sweeter.

The only selection that is self fertile, producing hairless Kumquat sized fruit. Originating in Japan, this selection will start cropping in its 2nd year. Taste is similar to the normal Kiwifruit. Fruits turn red when ripe. Flesh is red, mild and very sweet. Since Ken's Red is a female be sure to order a male to insure fruit set. Low-chill variety. One of the largest hardy kiwis. Since it crops heavily, it has a tendency to alternate bear. Heavy bearing one year, little or no bearing the next.
