Velvick is an avocado variety that is used as rootstock for grafting avocado trees. It has moderately vigorous root growth and has some resistance to Phytophthora. Eating quality is good with large sized fruit, thick skin for easy peeling/ scooping and creamy flesh that does not brown when cut.

The Swingle Citrumelo is a rootstock released by the US Department of Agriculture in 1974 as Phytophthora and nematode resistant. Citrus rootstock used to dwarf the variety grafted onto it. It is a mutated Trifoliata species which has hooked thorns and is much slower growing. Due to the difficulty and slowness in growing Flying Dragon, Citrus varieties grafted onto this variety are usually more expensive. It imparts the same characteristics to the scion, including cold hardiness, tolerance to root fungi and nematodes. The bitter fruits can be used in marmalades and marinades.
